How to Join a Minecraft Server
New to multiplayer Minecraft? This guide walks you through adding and joining a server in both Java and Bedrock Edition.
Found a server you want to play on? Here’s how to connect, whether you’re on Java Edition or Bedrock Edition.
Joining a Server in Java Edition
Step 1: Get the Server Address
Every server has an address (IP or domain). On our server list, the address is shown on each server’s detail page. For example: play.example.net or 192.168.0.42.
For some servers you may need to specify a port after the address (e.g. 10.13.0.3:25566), but you usually only need the address. We’ll show it to you if you need it.
Step 2: Open Multiplayer
Launch Minecraft and click “Multiplayer” from the main menu.
Step 3: Add the Server
Click “Add Server”. Enter:
- Server Name: anything you like, this is just a label for you.
- Server Address: the address from the server’s detail page (e.g.
play.example.net).
Click “Done” to save.
Step 4: Join the Server
Click on the server in your server list, then click “Join Server”. If the connection is successful, you’ll be dropped right into the server’s world.
Troubleshooting Java Edition
- “Can’t connect to server” - The server may be offline, or you may have the wrong address or port. Use our status checker to verify.
- “Outdated server” or “Outdated client” - Your Minecraft version doesn’t match the server’s. Check the server’s supported versions on its detail page and update or downgrade your client accordingly.
- “Disconnected” - The server may be full, or you may be banned. Contact the server admin if you believe this is an error.
Joining a Server in Bedrock Edition
Step 1: Get the Server Address and Port
Bedrock servers always require a port. On our server list, the address and port are shown on each server’s detail page.
Step 2: Open Servers Tab
Launch Minecraft Bedrock Edition, go to “Play”, then scroll down to the “Servers” tab.
Step 3: Add an External Server
Scroll to the bottom and click “Add Server”. Enter:
- Server Name - any label you like.
- Server Address - the IP or domain from the detail page.
- Port - the port number.
Click “Save” then select the server and click “Join”.
Troubleshooting Bedrock Edition
- Unable to connect - Make sure the address and port are correct. Bedrock and Java servers are not interchangeable - a Java-only server won’t accept Bedrock connections.
- Version mismatch - Bedrock updates automatically, but some servers may not be on the latest version yet. Wait for the server to update.
Tips
- Save servers you like - Adding them to your server list means you can rejoin without re-entering the address.
- Check server status - Use our status checker before connecting to see if a server is online and how many players are on.
- Read the server’s description - Many servers have rules, Discord links, or special instructions in their listing.
