How Voting Works and Why It Matters
Voting helps the best Minecraft servers rise to the top. Here's how the voting system works and how to maximize your server's visibility.
Voting is the engine that drives our server rankings. The more votes a server has, the higher it appears in the “Top” and “Trending” lists - which means more players discover it. Here’s how it all works.
How Voting Works
Each visitor - whether signed in or not - can vote for any server once per day. A “day” is a rolling 24-hour window from your last vote. Votes are counted in real time and feed directly into the rankings.
How Rankings are Determined
We use several ranking systems:
- Top servers - sorted by a time-decayed vote score (see below).
- Trending servers - sorted by the decayed vote score within a selectable time window (7, 30, or 90 days).
- Default browse - sorted by current player count.
Vote Decay
Votes don’t stay at full weight forever. Each vote keeps its full weight (1.0) for the first 2 weeks after it’s cast. After that, the vote’s weight halves every 14 days using exponential decay:
- 0-14 days old: weight = 1.0 (full)
- 28 days old: weight = 0.5
- 42 days old: weight = 0.25
- 56 days old: weight = 0.125
- …
This keeps the rankings fresh and rewards servers that maintain ongoing community engagement, while still giving credit to servers with a long voting history. The displayed vote count on each server’s card is the raw total; the decayed score is what determines sort order in rankings.
This means new servers can still break into the “trending” list even if they don’t have years of accumulated votes.
Tips for Server Owners
If you run a server, here’s how to maximize your vote count:
- Ask your community to vote daily, a simple reminder in your Discord or on your server spawn goes a long way.
- Use the vote widget. Embed a vote button on your website using our widget generator. Players click it and are taken directly to your server’s page to vote.
- Add a status badge. Show off your live player count with a badge on your site - it signals an active community.
- Get listed in the right categories. Make sure your server has the right tags (Survival, PvP, Skyblock, etc.) so players browsing by category find you.
Fair Play
We take vote integrity seriously. Automated voting via bots or scripts is against our rules and will result in votes being removed and your listing being delisted in certain cases. Play fair and encourage votes from your community.
